Malta Citizenship by Investment
The Malta Citizenship by Naturalisation for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment (NESDI) is a residency programme leading to citizenship in Malta. Primarily, this programme established by the Maltese government grants citizenship to high-net-worth individuals by directly investing in Malta’s economy, donating to charity, and holding residential property, thus making a significant contribution to the country’s economy.
The main benefits of Malta citizenship are firstly that of gaining citizenship in a strong jurisdiction within the European Union, that is politically and economically stable. Being a Maltese citizen also means being a EU citizen, allowing for free movement in other EU member states, and the right to live, work and study in all EU states including Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland. Furthermore, it gives the freedom to travel visa-free to many countries, including USA, Canada and Australia. Eligibility may also cover the applicant’s dependents, including spouses or partners, children up to age 28, and, under specific conditions, parents and grandparents.
The main eligibility requirements are holding a residency status for a period of 36 months or 12 months. Upon this, a contribution to the National Development and Social Fund is required as follows, to be affected prior to the issuance of the certificate of naturalisation:
- €600,000 for a residence of 36 months
- €750,000 for a residence of 12 months
Furthermore, a property purchase of at least €700,000 or a lease of at least €16,000 per annum for a minimum of 5 years is required, together with carrying out an exceptional direct investment in Malta, in accordance with the Regulations, and donating a minimum of €10,000 to a registered philanthropic and Government Agency approved organisation.
Applicants must be over 18 years of age, acquire global health insurance, hold a clean criminal record, having no reputation risk, not subject to criminal proceedings and not be considered a potential national security risk.
The application process, managed by a licensed agent under authorisation code AKM-AGEN, takes a minimum of year.
In conclusion, the Malta Citizenship by Naturalisation for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment (NESDI) offers a structured pathway for high-net-worth individuals to obtain EU citizenship through meaningful contributions to Malta’s economy. This programme not only provides a secure and reputable EU citizenship but also opens the door to extensive opportunities for the applicant and their family, including free movement and business opportunities within the European Union and beyond. For those seeking to become Maltese citizens and enjoy the advantages of EU residency, NESDI is a compelling option that aligns economic commitment with significant lifestyle benefits. By partnering with experienced legal professionals, applicants can ensure a efficient process in achieving a Malta passport.
