Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP)
The Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP) offers third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals) the opportunity to obtain residency in Malta on a long-term basis, under certain qualifying conditions. This program is attractive for individuals seeking stability in Malta, without necessarily pursuing citizenship, and it is based on property rental or investment. The Malta Permanent Residence Programme is a very popular programme in Europe.
The main benefits of the MPRP are that the programme grants permanent residency in Malta, allowing applicants and their family members to live in Malta indefinitely. Applicants can include their spouse, children, parents, and grandparents in the application. The MPRP allows Schengen-area visa-free travel and eventually allows to apply for long term residence status, and the possibility of naturalisation as a Malta citizen. The programme has no minimum physical stay requirement in Malta and allows the possibility to apply for a work permit under a separate process.
The eligibility requirements are split into two investment options in Malta being a direct investment and a property investment (to be held for a minimum period of 5 years), together with a donation of €2,000.
- Full government contribution (direct investment) is €98,000 if leasing.
- Reduced government contribution (direct investment) is €68,000 if purchasing a property.
- A donation to a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) of at least €2,000.
Amongst others, to apply for the Malta Permanent Residence Programme one must be over 18 years of age, hold a clean criminal record, acquire global health insurance and hold a minimum capital of €500,000, of which €150,000 should be liquid assets.
The application process, managed by a licensed agent under Authorised Registered Mandatories number ARM04222, may take months between the engagement stage, compilation and submission of all documentation, the processing stage and the final approval stage.
The Malta Permanent Residence Programme presents an attractive, flexible pathway to securing long-term residence in Malta for individuals and families from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. With its benefits of visa-free travel within the Schengen area, family inclusivity, and the opportunity for naturalisation down the line, the MPRP opens doors to a stable and enriching lifestyle in Malta. By partnering with experienced legal professionals, applicants can ensure a smooth and compliant process, ultimately achieving permanent residency and all the lifestyle advantages it brings in the heart of the Mediterranean.
